Our Top 10 Favorite UBAM Books for Back to School

What better time to share our favorite Usborne Books & More books than the beginning of a school year?! It’s no secret that we are big fans of UBAM and I love sharing our books with all of you!

So, buckle your seat belts! We’re going to share our top 10 favorite UBAM books for back to school!

  1. Key Skills Wipe-Clean Pack: Introduction : There are actually three packs of these, and they go up in difficulty levels. Each pack includes 4 books, a wipe-clean marker (we love UBAM markers!) and the high quality zippered plastic pouch to store them in. As a homeschool family, we use these often for extra practice, review and busy work in the van when we are on the go! Your public school kids would benefit from these as well, these are fantastic for extra practice for them and perfect for summer, winter and holiday breaks!
  2. Lift-the-Flap Questions and Answers About Weather : This is just one out of many Lift-the-Flap books I would recommend for back to school! We have so many great ones to read and explore, they’re packed full of information and my kids LOVE these! This particular one is about weather, and as we are starting a weather science unit I thought it was a good one to share!
  3. Look Inside Space : Similar to the Lift-the-Flap books, these Look Inside books also have flaps and such to explore and read. These are also packed full of information and we have so much fun looking through these. This one about space is our favorite, though we have several! What I really love about these is that they are great for all ages! My youngest, who is 2, enjoys them (with supervision) and this mama (I’m 31!) enjoys looking at them as well! So fun!
  4. Human Body Reference Book : Reference books! This is one of our regular reference books about the human body, so many amazing illustrations and details, but we also have beginner reference books as well! You’ll be SO impressed with the details in the illustrations, my 8 year old has always been fascinated by how her body works, and this was perfect for her!
  5. My First Reference Book About Nature : This is more of a beginner reference book, my littles LOVE pouring over the pictures and illustrations in this book! The pictures and illustrations are not as detailed as the regular reference books, but still beautifully done.
  6. Secrets of the Rain Forest – Shine-a-Light : Shine-a-Light books are SO fun! Your child learns so much in these books while thinking they’re just reading a story, and using a flashlight to peek through to see the pictures on the next page is super cool! We have several of these, but this is one of our favorites! These are also exclusive to Usborne Books & More!
  7. Seasons : This is one of our Young Beginner Reader books, I love incorporating these into our homeschool lessons. Seasons in particular as we just started talking about the weather and the seasons for Science! This one fit in perfectly with what we have been discussing. There are lots more to choose from including Seashore, Bug, Dinosaurs, etc.
  8. 50 Science Things to Make and Do : Science experiments are fun to do whether you’re utilizing them for a homeschool class or for extra fun at home. This is just one book we have that has fun experiments to try, but I love this one because it’s small and more compact. It also has a great binding that allows the book to lie flat!
  9. Learning Wrap-Ups Addition : I know… this isn’t technically a book, HOWEVER, these are fantastic if your child needs some extra help with their math! We have addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and even ones with states and capitals! It’s a hands-on approach and we love utilizing these when we can.
  10. Lifesize : This is one of my personal favorites, this book came out earlier this year and it’s AMAZING! Compare your hand size to that of a polar bear, go eye to eye with a squid! You get to see what lifesize animals are like up CLOSE up! So fun, educational and the illustrations are gorgeous.

Grit & Grace Book Review – Blog Tour

It has been a LONG time since I’ve read a book that truly matched everything that I feel. Being a mom is HARD. It just is. You give and give and give without getting much in return, but you don’t complain because it’s what you were born to do! Doesn’t make it less hard, but you do find yourself feeling weary, broken, lost. I’ve only gotten through the first several chapters of this book, but I can already tell you that it is powerful.

Grit & Grace had me from the beginning. If you’re new to Mustard Seed Mommy, let me give you a little recap on who I am before I tell you why this book matches me so well. I’m a homeschooling mom to four children (ages 2-8), I struggle with anxiety and panic attacks, have a child with a sensory processing disorder, and I’ve been rediscovering myself this past year. What do I mean by that? I felt like I had lost myself over the years, the person I was no longer matched the person I had become, not a bad thing, but a little scary when you actually realize it. So I’m finding myself again, I guess you could say.

So, like I said, this book had from the very first page. Let me summarize what this first section talks about. Suzanne writes about how she was responsible for getting her three young children (infant and toddlers) to church on her own, she was late, disheveled and overwhelmed. She realizes that this mom life is HARD, you find yourself giving away everything, but not getting that reboot that you need. She needed to rediscover herself and she needed Jesus in the process.

I was also touched by the 2nd and 3rd chapters – the 2nd chapter is entirely on “Stolen Identity”. As I stated before, I have felt like I’ve lost myself, my identity has been stolen in a way by marriage and motherhood. Then chapter 3… the first few sentences, and I quote, “My oldest son has a sensory processing disorder, which means little  abnormalities in his clothing or environment can throw him off.” THAT. IS. MY. LIFE. My 6 year old has a sensory processing disorder and it is one of the most difficult things I’ve dealt with as a parent.

I cannot wait to continue reading, I’m excited to see how it helps me grow closer to my Father and remember that I am loved and important.

The authors of this “Devotions for Warrior Moms” are Suzanne HAdley Gosselin and Gretta Kennedy. These women met when they became roommates at Multnomah University. They weren’t big fans of each other at first but they worked through their differences and ended up being best friends and remained roommates the entire four years of college. Twenty years later they came together to write this devotional book, and here it is… Grit & Grace: Devotions for Warrior Moms.

Ellie Claire 365 Devotional Journals Review

Just like the art journals from Ellie Claire that I reviewed HERE, these year long devotional journals are GORGEOUS!

My favorite of the three is the top one, ‘Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus’. The colors are perfect and I am so excited to dive into this in January.

Every page has a short devotional, a passage to read that coincides with the devotional and a space to journal and take notes.

They all also have that handy elastic closure and a bookmark! Ellie Claire doesn’t miss any details with any of her journals. I plan to give a few of these away as Christmas gifts this year, they are just so beautiful!

This one is a little more simple, I like that the the title is ‘Peace Begins With Me’ and that they made the pages look so relaxing and peaceful as well. So gorgeous!

This third one is just as beautiful, those peacocks are so pretty and you will find smaller images of them throughout the devotional.

You can find all three of these beautiful devotionals on Amazon, it’s easy to shop, just click “Shop Now” on one of the images below (these are affiliate links that I could earn a small percentage from your purchases, all funds earned go directly back into my blog)!

Ellie Claire Art Journals Review

I am so excited to share these gorgeous journals with you! I knew I was going to love them when I received the opportunity to check them out but when I received them, I was blown away! They are so pretty! I’m a sucker for a good journal and I love using them for my bible study time and to jot down my prayers.

I’ve looked through all three and plan to utilize them all, but the one I am currently using is The Illustrated Word : An Illuminated Bible Coloring Journal. I just love this journal, it’s full of these gorgeous coloring pages, plenty of room to journal, and there are even little illustrations from the archives of the Museum of the Bible.

It is truly a beautiful journal. I’ve been using a variety of different markers, pens and colored pencils in my journal and the quality of the paper is superb. No bleeding, nothing smears, it’s perfect!

The second journal is the Illuminate Your Story Journal. Another gorgeous journal. I love that this one has a place to slide a pen on the binding and it has an elastic closure rubber band.

If you like Renaissance style lettering you’ll love this one, there is a brief history on Illuminated Letters at the front of the book and then it gives you instructions and steps on how to create them yourself! How cool is that?! What a fun way to add some art and hand lettering to your journal.

The journaling pages have little quotes here and there, the first one for instance, is from Laura Ingalls Wilder, “As the years pass, I am coming more and more to understand that it is the common, everyday blessings of our common everyday lives for which we should be particularly grateful.”

I also love that there is a keepsake pocket at the very back of the book, as well as a bookmark so that you can easily find your place! The pages on this one is also very durable and my markers don’t bleed through!

The third and last journal I have is the Faith & Lettering Journal – I think I’m most excited about diving into this one soon. I absolutely love the cover and that this one also has the spot on the binding for a pen.

In the first few pages you’ll find an introduction about faith and hand lettering and some tips on how to use this book. Throughout the book are these beautiful hand lettering pages with bible verses – they are seriously beautiful. The picture below is one of my favorites in the whole journal, it’s also one of my favorite verses!

One of my favorite aspects of this particular journal are the pages where you can practice hand lettering. There are verses you can trace and then practice doing on your own. Then there are pages with graphing paper like backgrounds where you can practice basic hand lettering. You’ll also find basic journaling pages and dotted pages to practice your writing even more.

I am also loving the style of binding that all three of these journals have. If you look closely you’ll see that the front and back covers stand out a bit and the binding is a canvas type of material. This allows the books to lay completely flat… and that is so important when you are trying to journal! Don’t you hate when your books don’t lay flat and you have to keep pushing them down as you write?!?

What do you think about these journals? Are you a fan of hand lettering? Which journal is your favorite? Tell me in the comments below! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts! And please keep an eye out for my next Ellie Claire review, I have some devotional journals you will LOVE!

You can purchase these journals on Amazon by clicking the images in this post or I’ve attached links to the titles of the books as well. You’ll find a lot more images of the inside of these journals and the prices are phenomenal! Happy journaling!
